Comfort & Convenience for Moms
Congratulations you're expecting! Most moms-to-be will tell you that a comfortable, supportive bra is especially important during your pregnancy and well after you deliver. If you've noticed your breasts are beginning to feel swollen, sore or sensitive, it's probably a good time to begin shopping. During the first trimester, most women notice their breasts begin to get larger. By the end of your pregnancy, you may go up a full cup size or two. Besides breast tissue becoming larger, the changing size of your abdomen as your baby grows may mean you'll need larger bra band sizes as you move through your pregnancy. Visit our Fitting Room every 2-3 months to measure yourself to be sure your bra is giving you both the support and comfort you need during this special time. Fine department stores are another resource for a proper fitting. Most of these retailers have a fitting specialist on staff call ahead for her hours or to request an appointment. Also, if you plan to nurse your baby, you'll want to invest in several good-quality nursing bras to make feeding time comforting and convenient for you and baby. Below are a few tips to help you find the best bras for you during and after your pregnancy. Good luck!
Maternity Bras
- Begin shopping for maternity bras when you notice your breasts are getting larger or when your current bras begin feeling uncomfortable. You may notice these changes as early as the fourth week.
- Measure early and at least 2-3 times during your pregnancy. Month by month your body's shape and size will change the right size bra will keep you supported and comfortable.
- Look for bras with multiple back closures so you can adjust as your breast size changes.
- Select a supportive yet comfortable bra wide straps and soft fabrics are good features to look for.
- As your pregnancy progresses, you may feel the need for additional nighttime support. The 18 Hour® Stress Free Leisure bra is comfortable enough to wear to bed, and the 18 Hour® Posture bra is a good choice if back pain becomes an issue.
- Select a bra with a cup size that is roomy enough for your breasts to expand, but not so large that the bra feels uncomfortable.
Nursing Bras
- One of the most important features you'll want to look for in nursing bras are flaps that are easily opened and refasten with one hand. Expectant Moments® Underwire bra and Underwire Alternative bra both offer the convenience of a one-handed clasp.
- Bring breast pads with you when trying on nursing bras and place in the cup to check the fit.
- Choose a cotton-blend fabric so your skin can breathe.
- Purchase at least three nursing bras: one to wear, one in the laundry, and one as a spare just in case!
- Underwire or wire-free is largely a matter of personal preference. Most experts would recommend not wearing an underwire while sleeping, however, as pressure on the breast tissue can potentially obstruct milk ducts.
